Description

The Name

"Eitilt" is the Gaelic word for "flight".

Origins

No one knows exactly how the Eitilt Pegasus came to be. Naturally a very cautious breed, they were only re-discovered by humans in recent years. It is expected that their numbers were considerably thinned by poaching humans who wanted to collect the Eitilt’s colorful feathers in ancient times. Often referred to as “sky dancers” or “sky jewels” these brightly colored equines are now being reintroduced to the equestrian world.

Appearance

:bulletpurple:The Eitilt Pegasus is identified by its bright, swirled markings. These markings may vary in thickness, but are typically fairly thin. These markings never show up as purely straight lines or angles. In addition to the brightly colored swirls, the Eitilt Pegasus may also have small circles of color.

:bulletpurple: In the past, it was believed that the swirls on an Eitilt Pegasus are always one color. Recently, however, members of the breed have appeared with more than one color in their swirl pattern. It has been rumored that the color of the Eitilt Pegasus’s swirls will reveal its personality, but this has not been proven.

:star: NEW Very, very, rarely, variants of the breed may show up. There have been Eitilt Pegasi sighted that are reported to have two different colors in their swirl patterns and feathers.

:bulletpurple:The Eitilt’s wings are typically the same color as their base coat. However, the tip of each feather is the color of the swirled markings. Swirls may appear on the wings.

:bulletpurple:In addition to its wings, the Eitilt Pegasus also has feathers on other parts of its body. The most distinctive of these is the head plumage. This plumage is the same color as the swirled markings. Both mares and stallions have this plumage, though it is smaller on mares. The plumage is usually laid flat along the back of the head, but it may stand straight up when the Eitilt is frightened, alert, or trying to attract a mate.

:bulletpurple:The Eitilt Pegasus also has feathers randomly dispersed through the mane and tail. These feathers are the color of the Eitilt’s swirled markings.

:star: NEW The Eitilt's feathers may come in different shapes and styles- some may have very long, narrow, quail-like feathers with some may have peacock or ostrich-shaped feathers.

These feathers are naturally shed and regrown from time to time. The feathers may grow back in different places than they were previously. Some Eitilts do not have many mane/tail feathers, but there is always at least one.

:bulletpurple:The hooves and eyes always match the color of the swirled markings.

:bulletpurple:The Eitilt Pegasus is naturally a very light-built breed. There are no draft horse body types nor pony body types allowed within the breed. The legs are typically very slender and a nicely arched neck is preferred. The head is always very fine. It is said that in order to be a true Eitilt Pegasus, the horse in question must be able to drink from a tea cup without spilling a drop.

Personality
:bulletpurple:Eitilts are usually somewhat vain about their appearance. They are discontent if they feel they are dirty or disheveled-looking. They also hate having their manes and tails trimmed.

:bulletpurple:This breed has extremely high energy. A lethargic Eitilt Pegasus is likely ill.

:bulletpurple:The Eitilt Pegasus is extremely curious and can be entertained by a new object for hours. They adore shiny, pretty objects like jewelry and ribbons. They will steal these and hide them if they get the chance.

:bulletpurple:They will use bird noises in addition to normal equine sounds to communicate. Every Eitilt has a different “bird” voice.

:bulletpurple:Eitlilt Pegasi are flighty by nature and spook very easily.

Health, Uses, and Care.

:bulletpurple:Eitilts can be extremely picky eaters. They will reject most commercial horse feeds, but they enjoy fresh seeds and fruit.

:bulletpurple:Eitilts do not enjoy being left outside at night. It is wise to bring them in, as the dark makes them jumpy and they catch chill easily.

:bulletpurple:This breed is naturally delicate. They should always have their legs wrapped when eventing and any heat or swelling should be taken seriously.

:bulletpurple:Naturally graceful, the Eitilt Pegasus excels at Dressage. Jumping and Cross Country are good options as well, though the rider needs to be cautious and make sure the Eitilt’s legs are up to the task. These horses also make good Endurance horses because they eat and drink very little. They can survive for days on only a small bag of bird seed and a piece of fruit.

Breeding

:bulletpurple:In the wild, the Eitilt Pegasus mates for life. While this is not true in the stable environment, the mating process of the Eitilt remains the same.

:bulletpurple:When the stallion decides that he would like to mate with a mare, he must first perform a dance for her. This dance will include both ground and aerial moves to show off his skill, grace, and poise. A clumsy Eitilt stallion will likely never mate.

:bulletpurple:If the mare approves, the stallion will then present her with a gift. This is usually one of his own feathers, as they satisfy the Eitilt love for all things colorful and shiny.

:bulletpurple:An Eitilt stallion will always perform this ritual to mate, even with a non-Eitilt mare. If an Eitilt mare is to be bred with a non-Eitilt stallion, she will most likely have to be artificially inseminated.

Foals

:bulletpurple:Eitilt Foals are born from eggs. The pregnant mare will carry her eggs for roughly 8 months before laying them.

:bulletpurple:Eitilt Pegasus clutches can contain anywhere from 1-4 eggs, though 4 is extremely rare. Twins are very common.

:bulletpurple:The mare will want to begin building her nest about a week before the eggs will be laid. A clean, dry and warm space is preferable. A shed with windows or the mare’s own stall will do as long as it is big enough. Plenty of nesting material should be provided.

:bulletpurple:The eggs are pale gold with speckling that reflects both the mother and the father’s swirled markings.

:bulletpurple:When the eggs are first laid, they are about the size of a watermelon and soft. The eggs feel almost rubbery to the touch, and can be picked up in the dam’s teeth and moved. They are very hard to break with blunt force.

:bulletpurple:The eggs will gradually harden until they are roughly four feet tall and three feet wide. They are extremely heavy at this point and cannot be moved. They will reach this point 3 months after being laid, and they are ready to hatch.

:bulletpurple:Foals are born without plumage, main and tail feathers, or flight feathers. They begin to grow these at about six months of age.

:bulletpurple:The base coat color of the foal coincides with typical equine genetics. The swirled markings have a 35% chance of being the same color as the mother’s, a 35% chance of being the same color as the father’s, and a 30% chance of being a random mix of the two.

:bulletpurple:In the case of cross breeds, minimal swirled patterns may be passed on, and small mane/tail feathers. Wings may also occur in rare occasion, but the head plumage is always lost.

:bulletpurple:The parents of the foal will teach it to fly when it is about a year old. Though the mother and father typically share parenting duties, one parent may do this alone. If there is no parent, someone else must teach the foal or it will never fly.

:bulletpurple:In the wild, families remain close even after the foals have found mates of their own.
